Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Workers spend a significant amount of time indoors, and the quality of air within indoor work environments has a direct impact on the health, well-being and productivity of those workers. Contributing factors to poor indoor air quality (IAQ) include poor external air quality, inadequate or poor ventilation, and exposure to a range of chemicals, biological agents and other contaminants in the workplace air. Poor IAQ can cause a variety of both short-term and long-term health problems.
As was evident during the coronavirus disease 2020 (COVID-19) pandemic, sufficient ventilation and air filtration was an important factor in reducing the risk of aerosol transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. The Irish Health & safety Authority have since carried out detailed analysis on the practices deployed by companies with regard to indoor air quality and have consequently released a 'Code of Practice for Indoor Air Quality'.
