Wireles Air Quality Monitors

We at Critical-Environments have carried out extensive testing on a multitude of LoRaWan wireless sensors to ensure that we can  provide our customers with reliable, robust, accurate and high performing sensors for their applications.

Accurate and reliable data from our sensors is critical to companies who wish to make strategic or commercial decisions to ensure compliance and maintain a healthy environment for their workers.

Before recommending sensors to our customers we assess their specific requirements and understand what they want to achieve. We pay particular attention to creating IAQ awareness in the workplace because employees need to be comfortable in the knowledge that their environment is a healthy one.

Choosing the right sensor is pivotal to this requirement and we provide many different ways to visualise your IAQ data. Go to 'Visualise your Data' section of the website to evaluate the options available.

Sensor Features

Sensor Accuracy

Sensor accuracy testing was only conducted on Temp/humidity and CO2 sensors

Humidity

Some manufacturers boasted +/-2% accuracy on their humidity transducers which in the world of instrumentation would be considered very high accuracy. On testing we found that the accuracy was closer to +/-4% which was more in line with our expectations given the price of the sensor.
An accuracy of +/-4% is acceptable given the applications for IAQ.

Temperature

An accuracy of 0.5DegC is declared by the majority of manufacturers and we can confirm that all sensors performed reasonably well when checked against a calibrated Vaisala probe.

CO2 Level

It is very easy to check the calibration of the CO2 reading, just simply place the sensor outdoors for 10-15 minutes and the CO2 reading should be reasonably close to 400ppm.
An accuracy of +/-50ppm is acceptable for all IAQ applications.

Alarm Indication

Some sensors provide alarm indication in the form of an LED which changes colour when the CO2 level reaches a specific level. This merely prompts the occupant to open a window or increase the rate of mechanical ventilation.
The Mutelcor sensor has a large 22mm LED which changes from Green to Amber and then Red depending on the alarm setpoints. This sensor is particularly suitable for schools whereby the LED is visible to the students from any part of the classroom.
The Tektelic Breeze sensor is available with an option of a display showing the readings for the CO2, Temp and humidity. This display can be located on a desk or on the wall depending what the preference is. The background of CO2 reading on the display changes colour when the CO2 levels rise above the programmed setpoint.

Reliability

During our testing of sensors we have found that some sensors dropped off the network for a short period of time for reasons unclear to us. These sensors do not form part of our portfolio of sensors available to our customers. We have closely monitored all our sensor performance using the trend graphs on our touchscreens and cloud service and are confident in their stability and performance.

Battery V Power

Most LoRaWan sensors are battery-powered which eliminates the cost of installing power supplies and cables. A battery-powered sensor will typically last for 2-5 years depending on the frequency of data transmission and other sensor parameters. Sensors will typically transmit their data every 10-20 mins during daytime and every 30mins at night time.
At the time of installation/commissioning we will setup the sensors to optimise performance whilst optimising battery life.
If a company wishes to install powered sensors rather than battery-powered sensors, due consideration should be given to the installation cost of wiring and USB power outlets. We have several options available for powered sensors.

Mounting Options

Battery-powered sensors need to be easily removed from the wall to either change the batteries or to check the calibration by placing outdoors.
Some manufacturers provide a mounting bracket which is secured to the wall using screws. The sensor is then clipped to the bracket with either a twist or push in one direction (manufacturer's brackets vary).
Powered sensors are screwed to the wall or mounted on a bracket to sit on a desk.
